A new collection of gourmet bite-sized breaks
Wye Valley & Forest of Dean Tourism has launched a new online guide for visitors who like to explore a region through local food and drink called the ‘Sip, Snack, Snooze’ Collection.
There are eight bite-sized foodie breaks featured, aimed at friends, families or couples who are short on time and looking for insider tips on the best places to enjoy time in the area combining stylish accommodation with sampling the very best local food and drink – be it beer brewing, vegan baking, picnics in cider orchards or Michelin starred meals.
By selecting one (or more) of the suggested itineraries visitors will get to appreciate the landscape and the produce that comes from an area rich in farmland, forest and rivers. Fish from the river Wye and smoked in the Forest of Dean, the vineyards of Monmouthshire and Gloucestershire, Herefordshire’s cider orchards and gin distilleries, gelato style ice creams made with local milk and fruit, award-winning chocolate and good honest pub grub are all featured.
Each break recommends good places to eat, drink, stay overnight as well as additional experiences which might include brewing your own beer at Hillside Brewery, learning to cook over fire or bake vegan at Harts Barn Cookery School, or blending your own gin at Foxtail’s distillery.
For example here are a couple of the options:
Sip ciders and picnic in the orchards at Apple County Cider before a short drive into Monmouth to Green & Jenks for Welsh Cake gelato made from Monmouthshire milk and Herefordshire fruit. For hands-on food experiences choose from Bread Making, Sausage Making and more at Humble by Nature, ending the day at The Whitebrook – a nearby Michelin starred restaurant with rooms where Chris Harrod, of Great British Menu fame, cooks up a storm and the rooms are sleek and spoiling.
Lydney and the River Severn
Start the day with coffee and award-winning chocolate at Taurus Crafts. For lunch head up river to Severn & Wye Smokery Barn before winding down at the gorgeous country B&B Blaisdon House and a local wild boar sausage dinner next door at The Red Hart.
Ross on Wye
Drop into Truffles Deli, a gorgeous old shop front deli and café packed with local produce before heading a few miles downriver to The Saracens Head, an idyllic riverside pub at Symonds Yat. Back in Ross, gin lovers can learn how to blend their own gin at Foxtail Distillery and less than ten minutes’ drive away kick back at Brooks Country House drinking wine from the hotel’s vineyard and eating a Herefordshire steak.
