Tourism Forum, Gloucestershire College, 11 January

Tourism, Legends and Legacy.  Our annual tourism forum will take place on 11 January 2017 from 1030 until 1600 at the Forest of Dean Campus of Gloscol at Berry Hill, near Coleford.  Speakers this year include Patricia Yates, Director of Strategy and Communications, VisitEngland; Bernard Donoghue, Chair of the Tourism Alliance; Sally Shalam, Hotel and Tourism Consultant; and Mari Stevens, Marketing Director, VisitWales.  We will also be updating you on our plans for 2017, our achievements in 2016 and launching the Myths and Legends promotion.  Further details are on our website.  Tickets for members are £20 each – book your place to attend.

Membership Renewal

For most members the annual renewal date of membership is January 1st and we have just sent invoices.  This excludes members who joined after April 2016 whose renewal date is the anniversary of joining.  If you have not received an invoice, please contact us.  We would appreciate prompt payment as each year we spent many hours chasing payments.  For the first time we are now offering renewal by Direct Debit for which we will give a 10% discount on fees due and about a third of all members have taken up this offer.  If you would like to pay by Direct Debit and claim the discount, email


We are now taking forward our plans for apprentices in the Dean Wye – this is your opportunity to be involved in the process and to benefit from the scheme, both in terms of additional resource for your business and in terms of the high profile this scheme will receive nationally.  The plan is for us to recruit 4 level 3 apprentices – 2 of which will be based in hospitality businesses, and 2 will be placed with other tourism businesses.  We have had quite a lot of interest in this scheme but would still like to hear from other members who may be interested.  Full details are on our website.

Forester Business Awards 2017

Now in its eighth year, the glittering black tie gala evening will be held at Bells Hotel and Golf Club in Coleford on Thursday 27th April 2017 showcasing some of the Forest’s best businesses. With over 200 local business people attending, the awards evening fulfils a number of positive functions for the entrants, from boosting company morale and highlighting your talents and services to potential new customers or clients.  The winners and runners up of each of the 14 categories will receive a certificate or trophy and will be showcased within The Forester after they have been announced.

The 2017 categories are: Small Business of the Year – Pub of the Year – Restaurant of the Year – Retailer of the Year – Tourism Award – Health & Beauty Award – Family Run Business – Eco Business – Customer Service Award – Young Business Person – Employee of the Year – Employer of the Year – Business Person of the Year – Business of the Year.

The Hashpoint Project

We have recently been made aware of this project that is being piloted in the Forest of Dean and may be of interest and use to some members whose properties can’t readily be located from the postcode.  The Hashpoint Project’s aim is to help quickly and accurately locate properties without a street name and number. This is done by adding an additional letter to your postcode to pinpoint the entrance to a property to within a couple of metres. The combination of your postcode and the assigned letter is known as your Hashcode.  This may be relevant to your visitors, deliveries and emergency response vehicles.  Further details.

Free training for small businesses

The Skills Support for the Workforce (SSW) is a national programme that has been developed to upskill employees within small and medium-sized businesses It is co-funded by the European Social Fund and Skills Funding Agency. Gloucestershire College has been selected to deliver Low-Carbon and STEM SSW training on behalf of Serco, who manage the programme in our region in partnership with the Gloucestershire LEP.  To be eligible for free training your business must have less than 250 employees, be in the county of Gloucestershire and be in relevant sector which includes retail, creative and the visitor economy.   Further information.

The Bed & Breakfast, & Self Catering Show

The Third Bed & Breakfast, Retail and Self Catering Exhibition and Conference for Bed and Breakfast, Retail, Guest House, Inn, Independent Hotel and Independent Self Catering business owners will run on Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 February 2017 in Bristol.  Entry is free to all Bed and Breakfast / Guest House, Independent Hotel, Restaurant and Pubs with Rooms Owners, and Self Catering Business Owners if they pre-register.
